FASTMAIL ACCOUNT GUIDE

How to enable 2FA on Fastmail

Protect your inbox with Fastmail two-step verification. Set up recovery access first so a lost phone does not also cut off access to your email.

Prepare and enroll

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & Security.
  2. If needed, use Account recovery → Add recovery options → Add recovery phone and verify your number.
  3. Under Password & Two-step verification, choose Manage two-step verification → Add verification device.
  4. Confirm your password if asked and select Authenticator app (TOTP).

Add Fastmail to Sign In

You can use Sign In, our authenticator app for codes on your iPhone.

  1. With the setup QR code on another screen, open Sign In and tap Add → Scan QR Code.
  2. Scan the code, review the account details, and tap Add Account.
  3. Enter the current six-digit code in Fastmail, then give the verification device a recognizable name.

Fastmail displays a key for manual entry alongside its QR code. In Sign In, choose Add → Enter Setup Key, set Service to Fastmail and Account to your account name, paste the secret into Key, then tap Add Account. Keep this key private.

Keep recovery access available

Save the recovery code from Account Recovery securely outside your phone. Your recovery phone can receive SMS backup codes; choose Verify another way at login when needed.

Fastmail also supports compatible security keys and multiple verification devices. Add a backup before relying on it.

Other email apps

Most third-party mail and calendar apps need a separate Fastmail app password after you enable two-step verification.

If a code does not work

Make sure the Fastmail entry in Sign In matches the account you are using. Wait for a fresh code, then enter it before it changes. If fresh codes keep failing, check that your iPhone uses automatic date and time.

Keep a working sign-in session and your recovery information available while resolving the problem. Adding an entry to Sign In does not finish enrollment: the service must accept a code and confirm activation.
