Turn on Instagram 2FA

Turn on two-factor authentication on Instagram to add an extra step when you sign in. Here’s how to set it up and keep a backup way to access your account.

  2. Tap the menu (☰) → Settings and activity (or Settings).
  3. Open Accounts Center.
  4. Tap Password and securityTwo-factor authentication.
  5. Select your Instagram account.
  6. Choose a method and finish the setup prompts.

  1. Go to instagram.com and sign in.
  2. Click More (bottom left) → Settings.
  3. Open Accounts CenterPassword and securityTwo-factor authentication.

Pick a second step

Prefer an authentication app as your main method. Here’s how the options compare, from strongest to weakest.

MethodWhat to know
Authentication appBest choice. Use Google Authenticator, Duo, Authy, or a similar app. Codes work offline. You can link up to 5 devices.
WhatsAppReceive codes in WhatsApp. You may need to turn on text-message 2FA first before WhatsApp is available.
Text message (SMS)Convenient, but weakest because of risks such as SIM swapping. Prefer another method as your main option.

After it’s on (don’t skip)

  1. Save backup codes. Go to Two-factor authentication → your account → Additional methodsBackup codes.
  2. Store them somewhere safe. Use a password manager or print them, rather than keeping them only on your phone.
  3. Prefer an authenticator app as your primary method. Keep SMS or WhatsApp as a backup if you want.

Each backup code works once. You can generate a new set anytime; that invalidates the old set.

If you get locked out later

  • Use a saved backup code at login.
  • Or use another device that’s already signed in to manage 2FA in Accounts Center. Instagram may ask you to verify your identity.
  • If you lose phone access and your codes, use Instagram’s official account recovery.

Quick tips

  • Prefer an authentication app over WhatsApp, and WhatsApp over SMS.
  • When you get a new phone, transfer or re-add your authenticator. Use backup codes to sign in first if needed.
  • You can turn 2FA off from the same Accounts Center page, but keeping it on helps protect your account.
